One Thing

This is the tenth in our series from Paul’s Epistle to the Philippians.

Introduction

This set of messages comes from Chichester Baptist Church during the autumn of last year.  We will be guided through Paul’s letter to the Philippians.  The series title comes from chapter 3 where Paul writes “one thing I do: forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize, for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus”.

This south coast church has a large congregation and lots of activities, yet they are not complacent and still desire to discern how the Lord Jesus wants to lead them forward in the days ahead.

So what can we, a small group, learn from their experience and what will it be like for us as we seek to follow Jesus more nearly, day by day?

Song:  In Christ Alone

This song reminds us of just how unique Christ is – something that the apostle Paul was very conscious of as he wrote to his dear friends in Philippi.  The speaker today makes a small reference to this song towards the end of his message.

Bible Reading:  Philippians chapter 4 verses 10 to 23

If you have your own Bible to hand, please open it at Paul’s letter to the Philippians chapter 4.  Most of the scriptures in the message are displayed on-screen, but if you don’t have a Bible nearby you can click the icon above and the passage will be displayed in a separate browser tab.

The Message for Today: And Lastly …

This tenth and final message of the series is from December last year.  The speaker is Roger Hubert again.  I suggest that you stop the video when he has finished his message, when the band is ready to play a congregational song.  (If I have managed to set the video up correctly, this should happen automatically.)

Click the filmstrip icon below to start watching the YouTube video.  It should start automatically at about 52 minutes into the complete service.

Prayers

Pray about ‘one thing’ from the message today when you sensed the Holy Spirit speaking directly to you.

Spend a few moments to thank God for all his goodness to you in the last week.

Spend a few minutes in confession.

Now spend a few moments praying for the fellowship of the church to which we belong and its witness to friends, family, neighbours, the young and the old, and to the wider world.

Hymn:  Amazing Grace

Roger mentioned John Newton in his message so this seemed like the right song with which to conclude our series.  And in the video I have chosen we get six verses, which is more than our church hymn book has!

A Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,
As this service and, indeed the series, draws to a close, we are reminded of your abundant grace that sustains us.
We thank you for the forgiveness you have offered us through your Son, Jesus Christ.
May your grace continue to transform us, renewing our hearts and minds.
Help us to extend that grace and mercy to others, demonstrating your love in tangible ways.
May your forgiveness flow through us, healing broken relationships and bringing reconciliation.
As we go forth, may your grace be evident in our words, actions, and attitudes.
In the name of Jesus, we pray
.
Amen.
